Exceptional Needs Today

For the past three years, I’ve led the editorial design of Exceptional Needs Today, shaping its layout system, typographic standards, and overall visual identity across quarterly issues. Through ongoing refinement and strategic iteration, I’ve built a scalable design framework that supports accessibility, clarity, and visual storytelling as the publication continues to evolve.

Issue 15

Picture
As my first issue designing Exceptional Needs Today, I conducted a comprehensive visual audit of prior editions and identified opportunities to strengthen consistency, hierarchy, and reader clarity. I implemented a refined two-column layout system and typographic standards that became the foundation for future issues.

Issue 20

Picture
In Issue 20, I standardized headline typography to strengthen visual consistency and improve brand recognition when articles are shared independently.

Issue 23

In Issue 23, I explored intentional image containment versus full-bleed treatments to reinforce narrative tone within the layout.

Issue 18

Picture
In Issue 18, I developed a flexible layout system for the recurring “Reflections” poetry column, incorporating watercolor texture to keep the writing central while adapting to varying lengths.

Issue 16

Picture
For Issue 16, I experimented with page architecture and modular structural elements to support storytelling, increasing clarity while preserving visual interest. My approach centered on creating layouts that balance accessibility with visual appeal, ensuring that every reader feels seen and valued.

Issue 17

Redesigned article openings after the removal of introductory summaries, preserving hierarchy and structural balance within the system.

Issue 21

Refined the modular article system to prioritize the layouts most aligned with the magazine’s identity, strengthening cohesion while retaining flexibility.

Issue 22

Introduced a structured caption and citation style to accommodate museum imagery and contextual requirements, expanding the visual system while preserving clarity and hierarchy.

Special Edition 3

Designing Special Edition 3 was a powerful opportunity to celebrate the strength, resilience, and accomplishments of women and girls within the exceptional needs community. I applied subtle thematic art direction aligned with the issue’s focus while maintaining structural consistency within the core layout system.

Issue 24

For this holiday-focused issue, I integrated seasonal elements within the established visual system, maintaining brand consistency while supporting thematic tone.

Issue 25

Issue 25 I continued refinement of the modular layout system to strengthen consistency and scalability.

I would love to connect with you!
